At Staple Hill Primary School, our approach to behaviour is underpinned by strong relationships, clear expectations and a restorative approach. We believe that positive behaviour is built through trust, consistency and high expectations for all pupils.
A restorative approach focuses on building, maintaining and repairing positive relationships. It recognises that mistakes are part of learning and that behaviour is best improved when children are supported to understand the impact of their actions. When an incident occurs, adults guide pupils through a restorative conversation, helping them to reflect on what happened, take responsibility, understand how others have been affected and agree how to put things right. The aim is not simply to apply a sanction, but to repair relationships, rebuild trust and support better choices in the future, while ensuring expectations remain clear and consistent.
Our behaviour policy provides a clear and consistent progression. Pupils are supported through a reminder, followed by a warning, before being given time out in a partner class if needed. If behaviour continues to escalate, the pupil will be supported by a member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT). Whenever a child is sent to a partner class or spoken to by SLT, families are informed through a message on Class Dojo.
Positive behaviour and attitudes are actively recognised and celebrated. Pupils are rewarded with raffle tickets, giving them the opportunity to win prizes during Friday assemblies. During these assemblies, children are also recognised for making a ‘positive difference’ to our school by living our school values or producing work that demonstrates an ethic of excellence. Once per term, we hold a ‘Staple Hill Star’ assembly, where pupils who consistently demonstrate our school values day in, day out are recognised with a prestigious medal.
In class, pupils receive stickers and can move onto the recognition board for consistently showing our values. Each day, one child per class is chosen as Star of the Day, celebrating positive attitudes and behaviour. In addition, one child from each class is nominated weekly to enjoy chocolate milkshake and a biscuit with the Assistant Headteacher on a Friday.
Through this consistent, relational approach, we aim to create a calm, safe and respectful environment where all pupils can thrive.
