We are committed to inspiring children to love mathematics and overcome barriers through clearly differentiated and personalised learning opportunities. We challenge our More-Able Mathematicians further through additional More-Able and Talented weekly sessions and through a differentiated, personalised teaching and learning programme.
We promote Mathematics through outdoor learning and practical experiences and plan purposeful learning and make links to their everyday lives. Mathematics teaching builds on prior knowledge and gaps are addressed through regular guided sessions. Our children’s mental maths and problem-solving skills are developed through frequent rehearsal in different contexts. We emphasise this through regular homework activities including revision for ‘Tables’ tests.
We follow a ‘Calculations Strategies’ policy which we share in booklet form with parents and carers in addition to providing Mathematics workshops to share our practice.
These are the current age related expectations sheets for maths:
In Mathematics we are…
Responsible: We take ownership of our learning, approaching mathematical challenges with resilience and determination. We develop problem-solving skills that prepare us for real-world situations, fostering independence and a sense of accountability for our progress.
Respectful: We create a supportive learning environment where every pupil’s ideas and strategies are valued. Through mathematical discussions and collaborative problem-solving, we listen to and learn from each other, recognising that different approaches can lead to shared success.
Positive: We embrace a growth mindset in mathematics, understanding that mistakes are part of the learning journey. With encouragement and perseverance, we build confidence and a love for the subject, celebrating effort and improvement at every stage.
Kind: We support one another in our mathematical learning, working together to explore new concepts and overcome challenges. We celebrate each other’s successes and provide encouragement, ensuring that every child feels included, valued, and empowered to achieve their best.
We encourage excellence through fostering a growth mindset, challenging all learners with high expectations, and equipping them with the tools and confidence to approach problems with resilience and creativity.
We advocate global citizenship through exploring real-world problems, understanding how maths connects across cultures, and recognising its role in solving global challenges.
We foster a culture of talk through encouraging mathematical discussions, questioning, and reasoning, creating an environment where pupils confidently articulate their ideas and learn from one another
We promote play, passion and joy, engaging activities, puzzles, games, and investigations that inspire curiosity and a love for maths in all its forms.
Through mathematics, we equip our pupils not only with essential skills for the future but also with the mindset and values that will help them thrive as learners and as members of our community.
